Art history through the lens of binding media

When we talk about the development of painting, attention usually turns to the discovery of new, luminous pigments. But the real, quiet revolution of art history took place out of sight: in the binding media.

They are far more than sticky substances that hold pigment powder to a surface. The binding medium is the ordering force.

Throughout the history of art it has always stood alongside pigment as an equal — often surpassing it in importance. For while the pigment merely sets the tone, the binding medium determines the physical approach, the temporal rhythm, and the degree of control the artist must surrender or is allowed to keep.

Binding media decide between rigidity and flow, between enforced discipline and the freedom of self-organisation.

This essay therefore does not follow time, but a different axis: the control spectrum — from total pre-planning to complete surrender to the material.

Encaustic & Fresco

Total control — before the first stroke

Encaustic — painting with pigmented beeswax — is one of the oldest known techniques, already used in ancient Egypt. Wax must be worked molten; it solidifies within seconds. Every stroke is final.

Fresco demands the same pre-planning, but for a different reason: the pigments are applied directly into fresh lime plaster. They bond chemically with the wall as it dries — and that process allows only a few hours.

Encaustic and fresco remove any possibility of subsequent correction. Both techniques require that the decision falls before the touch, not during it. Control means here: complete advance planning, a painting already finished in the mind, which the hand then only executes irrevocably. Freedom exists solely beforehand — at the moment of application, the painter has none. It is no wonder that the question "When is a painting finished?" barely needed to be asked in this era — the material itself provided the answer.

Egg Tempera

The strict order of egg tempera

Egg tempera — pigment bound in egg yolk — was the dominant panel painting technique of the European Middle Ages. It dries within minutes and, once dry, cannot be reworked. Because egg tempera cannot be blended wet-into-wet, fluid transitions are impossible.

Egg tempera demands a different kind of control from encaustic: not speed, but patience. Since nothing flows into anything else, every tone value must be built up individually, stroke by stroke. Control here means: the willingness to submit to the painstaking, additive logic of the material.

Excursus: Albrecht Dürer

When the hand thinks in the old medium

Even when Dürer painted in oils, he transferred the old, meticulous hatching and linear technique of egg tempera onto the canvas. Every hair, every fold was rigorously constructed and isolated with a fine brush. Dürer shows us how hard it is to let go of the longing for absolute control. Although the new medium (oil) theoretically allowed blending, his hand remained loyal to the stubborn, mechanical discipline of the tempera era.

Pastel

No medium — pure pigment

Pastel is the only technique without a liquid binding medium: pure pigment, pressed into sticks with just enough binder to hold its shape. What sounds like freedom turns out to be a trap: pastel cannot be corrected. What is laid down stays. Every stroke is definitive — not because it dries, but because it cannot be dissolved. Pastel demands the same decisiveness as encaustic, only without the time pressure.

Oil

The first reversal

Oil paint dries through oxidation — slowly, over days, sometimes weeks. This is precisely what made its reputation: endless time to blend colours, soften transitions, return again and again.

Oil takes away the dictate of immediate fixing. It gives the process its own temporal dimension.

With oil, the relationship to control reverses for the first time. Where encaustic, fresco, egg tempera and pastel demanded everything in advance or in the same moment, oil allows control to be deliberately surrendered — to time, to the material itself. It is the beginning of a co-creation: the painter no longer only designs, but lets the binding medium participate.

Watercolour & Ink

Surrendering to flow

Water as a binding medium is the most unpredictable of all: it flows where it wants to, pushes pigment to the edges of wet areas, leaves watermarks, bleeds. The artist can set conditions — angle of the paper, wetness of the brush, concentration of pigment — but cannot determine the outcome. Watercolour is the technique of the prepared accident.

Watercolour demands the highest tolerance for loss of control. What looks like a mistake often turns out to be the most alive moment in the work. The binding medium becomes a collaborator with its own will.

Acrylic

Everything at once — and nothing for long

Acrylic is the most versatile binding medium of the 20th century: it can be applied thinly like watercolour, thickly like oil, mixed with texture pastes, sand, paper. It dries in minutes — which is both its greatest advantage and its greatest challenge for those who come from oil.

Acrylic does not fit neatly into the control spectrum because it can be positioned anywhere on it. It is not a technique — it is a toolkit. The artist must decide anew each time how much control they want to keep and how much to surrender to speed and material behaviour.

Digital

Total control — and what it costs

Digital painting tools offer something no physical medium ever could: complete undoability. Every stroke can be reversed. Every layer can be made invisible. The history of every decision is preserved.

This total control has a price: the resistance of the material disappears. And with it, the productive friction that forces physical media to make decisions. Many digital artists consciously introduce artificial limitations — texture brushes, restricted palettes, no undo — to recreate the creative pressure that physical materials provide for free. The most controlled medium of all turns out to need artificial loss of control to come alive.
