Holding the Herd

A visual dialogue with Jaime Danielle Smith

An open dialogue defined by autonomous islands of colour dancing across the surface, rarely blending — each retaining its distinct voice. A visual choreography where individual entities coexist in a shared space, refusing to dissolve into uniformity, yet deeply connected through their collective rhythm.

How the herd is held

The divergence lies in how this "colourful herd" is contained. On the right, bold, sharp lines strike through the canvas, acting as a powerful energetic frame that structures and guides the untamed movement.

On the left, the composition trusts a completely different force: the invisible tension of the open field, where space itself becomes the boundary and the white canvas holds the balance.

This, for me, is the fascination of these visual dialogues: two works that share the same starting point — autonomous colour going its own way — and yet give entirely different answers to the same question: what holds the whole thing together?
