Autonomy and the Protective Block

A visual dialogue with Katrin Hörner

Abstract work by Ekke Scholz: monolithic colour block with dark, tectonic lines on a light ground.

Abstract work by Katrin Hörner: dense colour cloud as protective block, below it hesitant, searching lines.

An intense visual dialogue about seeking, holding and letting go. While both works use a luminous red as an existential anchor, they choose entirely different energetic paths to navigate the tension between form and space.

Holding the space

On the left stands a monolithic colour block — firm and defined, asserting its mass. The dark lines do not seek shelter within this wall; instead they claim their own space, forming a tectonic structure that meets the void with confidence.

The restless search

In the right-hand work a compelling dynamic unfolds. The dense cloud above acts as a protective, anchoring block, from which the lines venture downward in a restless, tentative rhythm. It is a delicate web that longs for release, yet coils back in hesitant waves — always close to its safe origin, as if the protective umbilical cord to the block is not yet ready to be cut.

This, for me, is the fascination of these visual dialogues: two works created entirely independently, sharing the same anchor — the red — and yet giving entirely different answers to the same question: how much protection does freedom need?
