Why your watercolour looks like tempera — and what to do about it

A watercolour that looks like it was filled in with chalk. An acrylic painting that clings to the brush as long as oil — but without the suppleness.

This is not a talent problem.

It is a confusion problem: mistaking the application of a technique for the properties of a material.

Every medium has a handful of properties that are fixed — drying time, transparency, flow behaviour. These properties are non-negotiable. What can be negotiated is the application: how much water, how thick the layer, how fast the hand moves.

Confuse the two, and you find yourself fighting your material instead of working with it.

Example 1

The watercolour that wants to be opaque

The name gives away the property: aqua, water. Watercolour is naturally transparent — light passes through the paint layer, is reflected by the white paper, and returns through the colour. That is the luminosity watercolour is famous for. (Why water as a binding medium allows so little control is explored in my essay on the history of binding media.)

But if you apply watercolour like tempera or gouache — little water, lots of pigment, opaque layer on layer — you get something different: flat, chalky surfaces that no longer let light through.

The material was not painted wrongly. It was simply treated like a different material.

The property "transparency" cannot be switched off — but the application can be adjusted: more water relative to pigment, working from light to dark, letting layers dry rather than blending them.

Practical tip: If your watercolour paint looks like poster paint, the problem is usually not too little water in the painting — it is too much pigment relative to the water. Dilute more boldly than feels right.

Example 2

The acrylic that's waiting for oil

Oil dries over days, sometimes weeks. That is precisely its reputation: endless time to blend colours, soften transitions, return again and again.

Acrylic dries in minutes.

If you approach an acrylic palette with oil-paint expectations — blending slowly, spreading at leisure, seeking gentle gradations directly on the canvas — you will only find frustration: the paint skins over before the transition is complete. The palette dries under your hand.

That is not a weakness of acrylic. It is simply a different property that demands a different application: layering rather than blending, wet-into-wet only in small passages, or deliberately using a retarder to extend the open time. Practical tip: If you want the slowness of oil in acrylic, reach for a retarder — not the hope that the paint will eventually behave like oil.

Example 3

The oil painting that ignores its own physics

In oil painting one rule applies above all others: fat over lean. The lower layers are applied thinly and with little oil; the upper layers progressively richer in oil.

The reason lies in the chemistry of drying: oil paint does not dry by evaporation but by oxidation — and in doing so, its volume changes.

A fat (oil-rich) underlayer dries more slowly than the lean layer above it. When the lower layer tries to expand later, while the upper layer is already rigid, the painting cracks.

Ignoring "fat over lean" — applying the first layer thick and oily out of impatience — is not breaking a convention. It is breaking physics. The cracks often appear months later, long after the painting has been sold or given away.

Practical tip: If in doubt, make the first layer too lean rather than too fat. An underlayer that is too lean can easily be reworked later — one that is too fat cannot.

Property first, then technique

All three examples follow the same pattern: someone brings the habits of another material and applies them to a material that has different rules.

This rarely happens through ignorance of the technique itself. It happens because most beginners first learn how to execute a technique — and only later, if ever, why it works exactly that way.

The detour through the why is worthwhile. Once you truly understand the property of a material — why watercolour is transparent, why acrylic dries fast, why oil must be layered in a particular order — you no longer need to remember the right application. It follows naturally.

In short: Before you practise a technique, learn the property of the material you are using to execute it. Ask not just "How do I do this?" but also "Why does this material behave the way it does?" The second question saves you most of the mistakes of the first.
